Healthcare careers extend far beyond traditional clinical settings. At LifeCare, we’re passionate about introducing future healthcare professionals to the opportunities available in occupational health and preventative healthcare, where the focus is on helping people stay healthy, identifying risks early and supporting safer workplaces.
LifeCare recently participated in the Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) Summer Jobs Expo, connecting with students from a range of disciplines, particularly nursing, who were eager to explore career opportunities and gain practical experience while studying.
Representing LifeCare were Lini Justus, Regional Manager – Northern, and Manuela Jaramillo González, Assistant Regional Manager, who spent a busy and rewarding morning speaking with students about the occupational health industry, the services LifeCare delivers and the different career pathways available.

Introducing Students to a Different Side of Healthcare
One of the most interesting observations from the event was that many students had limited awareness of occupational health as a potential career pathway.
For nursing students, hospitals, general practices and other clinical environments are often the most familiar employment options. However, occupational health offers an alternative where healthcare professionals can apply their clinical knowledge in a preventative, workplace-focused setting.
Throughout the Expo, Lini and Manuela introduced students to the diverse nature of occupational health, explaining how the industry supports employees and employers through workplace health assessments, health monitoring, wellbeing initiatives and early identification of potential health risks.
As students learned more about the field, many expressed genuine interest in exploring occupational health as a future career option.
The conversations also highlighted strong interest in upcoming employment opportunities, including casual and part-time roles that could allow students to develop practical skills and gain valuable industry experience alongside their studies.
Why Consider a Career in Occupational Health?
Occupational health offers healthcare professionals the opportunity to make a meaningful difference by focusing on prevention and supporting people’s long-term health and wellbeing.
While traditional clinical healthcare often involves diagnosing and treating illness or injury, occupational health places significant emphasis on identifying potential health risks early, monitoring employee health and helping workplaces create healthier and safer environments.
Bringing Health and First Aid Skills to Life
LifeCare’s stand at the MIT Summer Jobs Expo was a popular destination throughout the event, with interactive activities encouraging students to get involved and learn more about health and emergency response.
Students were invited to receive free blood pressure checks, providing an opportunity to discuss the importance of understanding personal health indicators and the role of preventative health assessments.
Another highlight was the CPR challenge, where students tested their resuscitation skills using our training manikin, Anne.
The activity generated plenty of enthusiasm, friendly competition and valuable conversations about the importance of first aid knowledge and confidence in responding to emergencies.
